What is a watermark in Google Slides?

A watermark is a faded or semi-transparent word or image that normally displays in a corner, on the edge, or behind the main content. This type of tool gives you a simple way to display what you need to brand your presentation or let your audience know it’s confidential, but all in a subtle way.

Want to use a Google Slides theme with a “Private” watermark? Head to our template and click Make a copy.

Add a watermark to a single slide

You may have a particular slide where you want the watermark. This is handy if you have important or proprietary details on that slide and would like to add a watermark to inform your audience.

  1. Select the slide and go to Insert > Image in the menu.
  2. Choose the location for the image. Alternatively, you can Search the Web, snap a photo with your connected device Camera, or pick By URL to insert a link to it.
  1. When the image appears on the slide, drag it to the location where you want it. You can also resize it by dragging in or out from a corner or rotate it by turning the top marker left or right.
  1. With the image still selected, do one of the following to open the formatting sidebar:some text
    • Click Format options in the top toolbar.
    • Right-click and pick Format options.
    • Go to Format > Format options in the menu.
  1. In the Format Options sidebar, expand the Adjustments section.
  2. Use the Opacity slider, enter a percentage, or use the arrows to lower the opacity level.
  1. You’ll see your image update as you adjust the opacity, making it more transparent.
  1. Use the X to close the sidebar when you finish, and you’ll see your updated watermark image.

Note: Keep in mind that the Opacity feature doesn’t work the same way for all images in Google Slides. Unlike the Transparent feature you’ll see for shapes, Opacity refers to the inability to let light pass through an image. However, it often works for making images appear faded as you can see in this article.

Add a watermark to all slides

Maybe you want to add a watermark to all of your slides rather than just one. For instance, you may want to brand your presentation with a company logo without distracting from the slide content.

  1. Open your presentation and go to Slide > Edit theme in the menu.
  2. Select the slide near the top on the left below Theme.
  1. Follow the steps in the previous section to add the image, move or resize it, and adjust the opacity.
  1. Click the X on the top right to close the Theme editor.

You should then see your watermark on all slides in your presentation.

If the watermarked image is missing from a certain slide, that slide may be using a different layout. In this case, select the specific slide and then follow these same steps to add the image to it in the Theme editor.

Add a watermark behind slide content

If you want to place a watermark on a single slide or even all slides that’s behind the content, you can do this in just a few steps. You often see this type of thing when you use a template or download an image created by a third-party.

Maybe for your presentation, you want to add a watermark with “draft,” “copy,” or something similar.

  1. Follow the guides above to add the image to a particular slide or all of them, move it to a certain spot, and adjust the opacity.
  1. Select the image and either pick Arrange > Order in the menu or right-click and move to Order.
  2. Choose Send to Back.

You’ll then see the watermarked image behind the slide elements.
